Emiliano Santa Cruz and Yaremis Félix in The Dog in the Manger at Spanish Repertory, NYC. June 2004.

What does Ágora mean?

The name Ágora comes from the Greek and literally means “a place of gathering”.  It refers to the forum that served as the center of social, political, intellectual, economic and public Athenian life in Ancient times. Just as its ruins have witnessed the spectacular transformation of civilization and its presence transcends the barriers of time and space, we seek to create in our theatre a modern Ágora where audiences can find a forum to the exploration of their own selves and to the definition of our place collectively in history. Our Ágora aims at becoming a focal point in the lives of our audiences that beyond providing a forum for gathering and exchange of ideas, is able to transcend the concepts of time and space and speak to individuals from a multiplicity of cultures and walks of life.

How did Ágora happen?

Founded by Artistic Director Isabel Ramos and Resident Designer Awymarie Riollano, Ágora marks a new phase in the collaboration of both artists. Having previously produced Yukio Mishima’s Hanjo for the 2002 American Living Room Series at HERE (Selected as Best of the Series) and Lope de Vega’s The Dog in the Manger for Spanish Repertory Theatre (playing indefinitely as part of their repertory), they have joined hands to fulfill their dream of producing innovative work. Under this new initiative, the plan is to produce and present three performances per year, two in the city of New York, and one in a different location with a varied group of artists and collaborators to be determined  according to the specific needs of each project and the growth of the organization.
